Driveshaft Center Support

Two or three piece drive shafts assemblies require a Center support to maintain their alignment. This is a thick doughnut shape rubber made support with a sealed bearing in its center it bolts to the frame or underbody of the vehicle. It supports the center of the drive shaft where the two piece shaft connects. The center support mount prevents vibration and noise from transferring into the vehicle.

Driveshaft Center Support

Most common reasons for center support failure.

  • U joint failure: when a U Joint or CV binds during its movement a tremendous stress is applied on the center support which tries to maintain a straight alignment of the propeller shaft, causing a quick deterioration of the rubber.

  • Age: Driveline center support are made of rubber and as any other product made of rubber, cracks and sagging will occur over time.

  • Bearing failure: The center support bearing operates in very high speeds; also its proximity to the exhaust system can cause some premature failure.

  • Wrong installation: Drive shaft Center support that is not perfectly align (straight) will deteriorate rapidly.

Most common center support problems

  • Noise from center support.

Caused mostly by a bearing lack of lubrication or failure, in extreme cold weather (snow) some noise can be heard but will go away after a short drive.

  • Broken support rubber.

Usually reflect another problem such as a joint failure, but in some cases due to age, repair or replacement of the driveshaft is usually recommended since age also affects the joints.
